Door County is a popular destination for tourists, especially family travelers, to northern Wisconsin. With something for everyone, Door County makes an ideal vacation spot for the whole family. Door County is full of fun museums, attractions and plenty of outdoor adventure, especially if you head to Washington Island at the tip of the Door County Peninsula.
Getting to the island is easy. A short, 30-minute ferry ride aboard Washington Island Ferry (simply purchase an additional ticket for your car if you wish to bring your own transportation along) takes you across Death’s Door, a narrow strait connecting Lake Michigan with Green Bay. What was once the most dangerous part of the Great Lakes now comprises only the beginning of the exciting adventure of visiting Washington Island.
Once there, the island offers great shopping, dining, golf and lodging experiences so the entire family’s needs are met while exploring the island. There is no shortage of great hiking on the island, but for a hike with the greatest reward, be sure to climb up to Mountain Park tower, which offers a 360-degree view of the island.
Be sure to also visit Schoolhouse Beach during your stay to soak up the sun and take a refreshing dip in the calm waters when the weather is warm. Not only does it offer breathtaking scenery and great photo opportunities, but it is also a great place for a picnic lunch along the peaceful shores. UTV, moped and boat rentals are a great way to get out and enjoy the island. You can also hop a ferry for a daytrip to nearby Rock Island, home of Wisconsin’s oldest lighthouse.
Before heading home, be sure to take part in one of the most iconic activities on the island — eating a lawyer. These unusual fish are unique to the surrounding waters and taste similar to lobster, so they aren’t just fun to eat but are also delicious!
