Multigenerational

Family travelers can savor the last precious weeks of summer on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in Marquette County. The county’s prime location allows visitors to explore its vibrant downtown scene, lineup of festivals and events and, for outdoor enthusiasts, enjoy the surrounding landscape through fun activities. Take to the outdoors before cooler weather sweeps into some of these exciting spots in and around Marquette.

Water Activities

The county borders Lake Superior, making it a great spot to go boating, sail boating, kayaking and paddleboarding. Additionally, Marquette boasts many launching spots for visitors to explore the lake. Those wanting to canoe, kayak or paddleboard can head to The Cove at Presque Isle Park for entry to the water. For larger boating options, find 10 protected boat slips for seasonal and transient boaters at Big Bay Harbor of Refuge.

The county’s proximity to the lake also allows visitors to go fishing. The lake contains many species of fish, including Chinook salmon, Coho salmon, lake trout, whitefish, steelhead and splake.

Waterfalls

Marquette County features an array of waterfalls, with many accessible by trails well suited for beginners, children and pets. Family-friendly waterfalls include Warner Creek Falls, Yellow Dog Falls and Wright Street Falls.

Trails

If you’d rather not get wet but still want to enjoy the great outdoors, the Iron Ore Heritage Trail connects the downtown communities of Marquette County with the surrounding landscape. The 47-mile, multiuse trail links from Republic Township to Chocolay Township and features accessible paved segments. Stop at designated trailheads and learn about each of the region’s past from stories on the trail guide kiosks.

For a scenic overlook, head to Thomas Rock, a wheelchair-accessible, family- and dog-friendly trail leading to great views of Keweenaw Peninsula, Lake Superior, Lake Independence, Big Bay and the remains of an old Ford sawmill. The short hiking trail allows visitors to see the colorful foliage and traverse a bridge to the endpoint. Information posts dot the trail, describing plants and local wildlife.
