West Virginia: The Landlocked State Where Late Summers are Best Spent on the Water

It’s one of the most overlooked states when it comes to family travel, with most passing through it entirely without realizing just how many gems lie within. And while West Virginia may not have a coastline, it does have a wide range of lakes and waterfalls, making for an ideal end-of-summer vacation.

Summersville Lake

The largest lake in the state, Summersville Lake spans more than 2,700 acres and 60 miles of shoreline. The lake is a popular destination for swimming, snorkeling, fishing, paddling and boating.

 

Harpers Ferry National Historic Park

At the intersection of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, this park includes a 19th-century industrial region and the scene of John Brown’s failed abolitionist uprising. The park is also home to a canal, which you can admire from a footbridge.

Tygart Lake State Park

You could stay at Tygart Lake State Park for many days. On the shores of Lake Tygart near Grafton, this park is home to a 20-room lodge, restaurant, gift shops, cabins, camp sites, hiking trails, marina with boat rentals, area for swimming and waterskiing, and more.

West Virginia Waterfall Trail

See the best of the state’s waterfalls on this trail, covering stunning cascades. The trail features 43 spots across the state, including Blackwater Falls, Coonskin Grotto, Dunlop Falls and Seneca Creek Falls. Check in at waterfalls and earn prizes as you go.
