Destinations / Europe

Austria is synonymous with Imperial tastes and old-world luxury — the perfect setting for a fun and sophisticated family trip. Enjoy the country’s Baroque architecture and natural beauty from quaint mountain towns to stylish cities.

For families interested in the best of old-world class and high -ociety comforts mixed with rich history and small-town charm, Salzburg, Austria, is calling.

Just on the border of Germany near the Eastern Alps, the medieval city of Salzburg, bursts with museums, historic buildings, cafés and family-friendly activities.

Sightseeing in this city is a breeze as it’s easily walkable and there is something to see on every corner. Stroll along the Salzach River, observing medieval buildings, Baroque cathedrals, ancient abbeys and incredible cafés.

The Salzach River is lined with cafes that put your morning coffee to shame, such as Café Bazar, Cafe Sacher and Café Mozart Salzburg — all providing breakfast, sweets, hot drinks and cozy seating.

For even more charm and history head to Old City, Altstadt, and visit the birthplace of Mozart. Stop in Mozarteum Salzburg, Mozart’s childhood home turned museum and tour the home where the late composer was born, grew up and drew inspiration. Introduce the kids to the iconic sounds of Mozart with a tour and some music.

Of the many must-see landmarks in Salzburg, the Hohensalzburg Castle is at the top of the list. Kids of any age will love the castle’s magic theater, prince’s chambers and museum. Step back in time and explore the Alm passage exhibit and take a ride on the funicular.

The Baroque architecture and ornate fountains of Schloss Hellbrunn Palace will keep you and the kids busy for quite some time. Tour the extensive property, gardens and impressive interior for an embarrassment of wealth.

Live out your Von Trapp family dreams with The Sound of Music tour. Most of the film may have been shot in sunny California, but some iconic scenes and exterior shots were filmed in Salzburg, such as the famous “Do-Re-Mi” song, filmed at Mirabell Castle and Gardens.

Needless to say, you’ll have your hands full with classic music and art, Imperial palaces and luxury estates. Mix it up a bit with some folklore at the Salzburg Museum. Tour creepy oddities and unique exhibits with the kids, or opt for one of the more contemporary floors of the vast and impressive collection.

Visiting Salzburg without trying some authentic Austrian cuisine would be a real shame. Make sure you take the kids for some wiener schnitzel, wiener würstel and goulashand a view — at Weihrwirt in Salzburg.

Sit along the water with a drink or stick to casual dining at Felleis & Knittelfelder’s hotel and restaurant, Wirtshäuser. The bar and restaurant offers affordable traditional Austrian cuisine in a cozy, but classic setting.
