Travel Tips

Visiting the Grand Canyon is the vacation of a lifetime for many family travelers, and bringing the pooch along for the ride will definitely make it a trip to remember. Photos featuring the family’s best furry friend posing with the majestic beauty of the canyon in the background are sure to create fond memories that will last a lifetime. But while dogs of all shapes and sizes are welcome at the park, there are a few important things to be aware of before packing up the car and hitting the road.

Park rules require dogs to remain on leash and with their owners at all times — that means no leaving your furbaby tied up outside the car while you enjoy a short hike. Dogs are not allowed below the canyon rim (unless they are service animals assisting a visitor with a disability), so plan your dog-friendly activities along the pet-friendly trails above the rim and in the campgrounds and developed areas. In addition, dogs are not allowed on park shuttles.

If you are planning an overnight stay in the park, your options include Yavapai Lodge on the South Rim, which offers pet-friendly rooms, or the campgrounds above the rim. The South Rim also offers boarding options at Grand Canyon Kennel, if you prefer different accommodations or plan to spend time hiking or camping below the rim.

With a little planning ahead and following the park’s pet rules, the Grand Canyon will leave a lasting impression on the whole family, ensuring everyone enjoys their visit and your cherished furry companion isn’t left out of the family fun.
