Expect someone to call you “hon” at least once a day in this seaport city that’s been reinventing itself for at least a century. Warm hospitality and enjoying life seem bred into everyone’s DNA here. Having fun is a way of life and traveling families can’t help being charmed.
A round of summer festivals begins with the AFRAM festival in Druid Hill Park on Juneteenth weekend (June 19, 20 and 21), celebrating the African American heritage of art, music, culture and history. The three-day party is free and filled with music, entertainment, African drumming, carnival mask making and activities for children.
Two long-standing summer festivals merge this year for the 250th. Maryland Fleet Week and Flyover celebrates the Chesapeake Bay’s maritime traditions and Marylanders’ contribution to national defense. Along with flyovers and ship tours, the Inner Harbor is full of family activities. The other early summer highlight is Fourth of July fireworks, with a dazzling show easily seen from Federal Hill or points around the harbor, and a day of activities or kids.
This year, June 26 to July 4, SAIL250 Maryland and Air Show Baltimore combines maritime experiences with aerial events, marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. The extravaganza includes U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard vessels, flyovers, and an airshow by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron and other aviation performers.
