Islands are always a great option for a family vacation, but if you don’t want to head to a far-off destination, you can always find inspiration within the borders of the continental United States. Michigan’s Mackinac Island checks all the boxes and then some when it comes to a family-friendly island destination to disconnect from daily life and slow down a step to enjoy all Mackinac has to offer.
Located in Lake Huron between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas, there are no cars allowed on the island and no roads or bridges connecting it to the mainland. So instead of blaring horns, you’ll hear the jingle of bicycle bells and the clip clop of horses as they transport people around the island. This not only creates a unique and quaint experience, but also creates peace of mind and an element of safety hard to find these days.
There is plenty to see and do around the island, from parks where kids can enjoy playing in the fresh air to historic landmarks and museums to explore. Hiking, biking and water sports are all great options for families to do together on the island, and there are even great spots like the Great Lawn at Mission Point Resort, where you can take advantage of the breeze and fly kites together. If you want to do some shopping for souvenirs, the downtown area is ideal, or you can head to one of the island’s two butterfly houses to take in the incredible sight of butterflies from around the world at Wings of Mackinac and The Original Butterfly House.
You’ll find plenty of good food on the island, but one thing you won’t want to skip is letting everyone indulge their sweet tooth. Mackinac Island is famous for its fudge, and you can sample bites at any of the many fudge shops located downtown. If you’re lucky, you can catch the masters at work and see how this sweet treat is made.
Getting to the island is easy, whether staying for several nights or just visiting for the day. You can fly into Mackinac Island Airport or you can catch a ferry. You’ll have to leave your car behind, of course, but you are always welcome to bring bicycles along on the ferry. Once there, you can explore the island on foot, rent bicycles or even take a Mackinac taxi, also known as a horse-drawn carriage.
