Each season in Rapid City has its own unique draw for family travelers, but fall is a magical time when nature’s beauty and the city’s fascinating personality really shine. Whether you have one day or several in this South Dakota city this season, you are in for a treat as you explore the city and surrounding landscape. Read on to get great ideas for some of the best activities that will make Rapid City the perfect fall getaway for your family.
Nature is always a popular attraction for visitors to Rapid City, but in fall, the colors of the season are at their most spectacular. All over town you can catch the brilliant hues, but to become fully immersed in the yellows, oranges and reds of the season, take a scenic drive through places like nearby Custer State Park, the Black Hills Forest, Canyon Lake Park and Spearfish Canyon. Each of these drives will not only let you do some good old-fashioned leap-peeping but will also let you enjoy the beautiful landscapes for which the area is known.
Fall is also a great time to experience the local culture. Each month has a packed calendar of events showcasing the local history, culture and flavors. This weekend’s Black Hills Pow Wow (Oct. 6–8) at the Mount Rushmore Monument lets you experience the beautiful traditions and pageantry of local native tribes, while the Creative Hands Annual Autumn Bazaar, which takes place on Oct. 20 and 21 at the city fairgrounds, features handicrafts showcasing the creativity of the local artistic community.
In November, the family can continue to enjoy the season by tasting fall flavors on local menus while you start getting into the holiday spirit. Take part in events like the opening of the Main Street Square Ice Rink on Nov. 18 and take a ride on the 1880 Train Holiday Express on Nov. 24 and 25. This fun event isn’t just perfect for train lovers, it is great for all ages who want to get in the holiday spirit with an authentic train experience, including a visit from Santa during a one-hour ride complete with hot cocoa and sugar cookies.
