As summer heats up, family travelers look for the best ways to enjoy their well-earned vacations where they can make the most of the warm weather and summer sun. That is exactly where Jacksonville, Florida, comes in. Located in the northeastern corner of the state, Jacksonville’s incredible beaches and family-friendly attractions make it the perfect destination for a family summer travel itinerary.

Jacksonville’s 22 miles of beaches are the perfect way to beat the summer heat, whether looking for watersports or sightseeing. Jacksonville Beach is an ideal spot for swimming and surfing and is known for some of the most incredible photo opportunities in the early morning hours as the sun rises over the water. For a more eclectic beach experience, head to Boneyard Beach in nearby Talbot Island State Park, where the whole family can enjoy exploring the driftwood graveyard that makes this haunting location a year-round fan favorite.

Once you’ve had your share of beach time (okay, so that may never actually happen!) head inland to check out some of the city’s other great attractions like Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, where 100 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and exhibits are home to more than 2,000 animals.

Jacksonville also has the perfect combination of kitsch and culture, making it a great place to tour the city looking for fun family photo opportunities. The downtown area is not only fun to explore, it is loaded with great art. From giant murals on the sides of buildings to random statues and art installations along the city’s walkways, Jacksonville is home to a burgeoning art scene. The family will not only enjoy the creative side of the city but also have fun taking photos at sites like Mosh Mouth, a giant mouth sculpture you can walk through in James Weldon Johnson Park.

To round out your trip be sure to visit some of the city’s great eateries. One particular family favorite is Sweet Pete’s, a downtown candy shop offering classic fare like burgers and hot dogs along with plenty of sweets and surprises. Located in the historic Seminole Club, this candy mansion not only creates handcrafted chocolates but also sells fun and hard-to-find candies and toys, and offers interactive factory tours the whole family will enjoy.
