Destinations / North America

On Jan. 1, South Dakota takes inspiration from the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, with a special sweepstakes family travelers can enter. Travel the Float brings South Dakota’s iconic parade float (which will feature in next year’s Rose Parade) to life, from Mount Rushmore National Memorial to Custer State Park and beyond.

The winner of the sweepstakes can expect an adventure-filled trip across the state:

Day 1: Black Hills – Rapid City

Known as the “City of Presidents,” Rapid City features more than 40 U.S. presidential bronze statues. Thirty minutes from the city is Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Walk the Presidential Trail loop for unbeatable views and stay for the evening lighting ceremony on July 3.

Day 2: Black Hills – Custer State Park

Follow Iron Mountain Road’s hairpin curves and tunnels into Custer State Park. Watch 1,500 free-roaming bison move across thousands of acres of granite peaks and rolling plains, and sleep inside the park for star-filled skies.

Day 3: Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway to Deadwood or Chamberlain

Traverse a 19-mile stretch of scenic highway through Spearfish Canyon, complete with three stops at different waterfalls (Bridal Veil Falls, Spearfish Falls and Roughlock Falls). After, head to Chamberlain and watch the agricultural tapestry of the state unfold before your eyes.

Day 4: Eastward to Missouri River

In Chamberlain, you’ll come across Dignity: Of Earth & Sky, a 50-foot-tall tribute to Indigenous women overlooking the Missouri River. Head to the Missouri River and grab a bite while savoring the views.
