Destinations / North America

May marks the commemoration of Accessibility Month. Family travelers with accessibility concerns, consider a visit to one of these destinations offering accommodations for all travelers.

Alexandria, Virginia

Alexandria ensures its attractions are accessible for all visitors. For travelers arriving at one of the nearby airports, elevators offer Braille signage and shuttle buses feature wheelchair lifts. To further navigate the city, check out the disAbility Navigator website, which offers a list of transportation services in and around the city.

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Tennessee Aquarium offers complimentary wheelchairs on a first-come, first-served basis. All of the freshwater aquarium’s exhibits are wheelchair accessible. Head to Hunter Museum, which also offers complimentary wheelchairs as well as strollers.

Kissimmee, Florida

Home to popular theme parks, Kissimmee offers visitors with mobility and sensory challenges a variety of options. Gatorland boasts the world’s only wheelchair-accessible zip line. Universal Orlando Resort offers ride and attraction information, including sensory-related features.

San Antonio, Texas

This city is home to ultra-accessible theme park Morgan’s Wonderland. The entire park was designed for guests with mobility issues, neurodiversity and other special needs. Offerings at the park include Braille signage, wheelchair-friendly rides, special sensory elements and a service-animal rest area. Admission is free for guests with special needs.

Seattle, Washington

Seattle’s most iconic attractions feature accommodations for guests with accessibility concerns. Pike Place Market is ADA accessible, with plenty of designated parking spots. 5th Avenue Theatre offers assistive listening devices and Braille and large-print programs. Woodland Park Zoo offers a sensory garden and maps with directions to quiet areas.

Best of Both Worlds

Enjoy the best of both worlds when you fly with TAP Air Portugal thanks to the Portugal Stopover program. With the program, TAP passengers, whether traveling for business, leisure or both, can stop in Portugal for up to 10 days at no additional airfare on the way to their final destination. What does this mean for travelers wishing to explore by both land and sea? It means after flying to Portugal with TAP and experiencing the country in an entirely new way, travelers can then embark on scenic river and ocean cruises from  Portugal’s port cities, or fly with TAP to another European destination.

Icelandair’s Long Weekend Getaways Are a Great Way to Explore

Icelandair is well-known for its stopover program, which allows passengers to stay in Iceland for a few days at no extra charge. It’s a great way for families to see a new place and explore a new country on their way to and from Europe. When my family travels, we enjoy spending a couple days exploring Reykjavik and Iceland’s natural beauty as part of our trip. Iceland has become one of my family’s favorite destinations. We always find something new to do, no matter how many times we visit.

Board a Nile River Cruise with A&K Sanctuary

If Agatha Christie took a Nile voyage today, we like to think she would do it aboard one of our A&K Sanctuary riverboats — consistently voted the best on the river, from boutique cruisers to a handsome six-suite dahabiya.
