For families who like to drink together, there may be no simpler pleasure than getting out and exploring some of the dive bars in a city.

Just because a bar looks like a dive, doesn’t mean it is not worth visiting. Dive bars, while offering some great atmosphere, usually offer relatively cheap drinks and great spots to meet and mingle with locals. In the past, the term dive typically meant somewhere with a less-than-reputable public perception. In recent years, dive bars have taken on the identity of a more laid-back and low-key place to drink.

The cool thing about finding a dive bar is each one is going to have its own history and stories to tell. Every one has its own character and represents the locals who gather there. Depending on the city you are visiting, there are famous and visit-worthy dive bars.

Keep in mind not to judge a bar by its appearance, especially when you’re looking for a fun dive. If you notice a cool-looking bar when you get into town, Google it to see if it is noteworthy for any reason.

Bob and Barbara’s is located on South Street in Philadelphia. The originator of the city-wide special, Bob and Barbara’s is a great place to drink and take in a drag show. Bob and Barbara’s has been open since 1969, giving it plenty of time to build a local, and wide-ranging, following.

Dublin House sits on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The decor hasn’t changed too much since the place originally opened in the 30s. The low-key atmosphere and 1950’s period-authentic furnishings make this bar perfect for mingling with the locals. Dublin House is also one of the best places to get a Guinness in New York.

The King Eddy originally opened in 1933 in Los Angeles. The bar offers standard dive bar fare, including beer and a variety of liquors, complete with bar bites reminiscent of days gone by. Grab a drink and a bite while catching an awesome live show.

In Seattle, music-loving college students should take a trip to Blue Moon Tavern. This holdover from the days following Prohibition opened at a time when bars could only be as close as one mile from an institution of education. The Tavern hosts live music almost every night and is an excellent gathering place for students and visitors alike.
