Pennsylvania is something of a sleeper hit when it comes to fall family travel. While bucket-list destinations like Hawai’i may hog all the attention, Pennsylvania is busy proving in countless ways why it is the place to be this fall.
Pennsylvania has a little bit of something for everyone, from family-friendly activities and historical landmarks to outdoor adventure and natural beauty. And when it comes to fall vacations, that natural beauty is practically impossible to overlook with the beautiful colors of fall foliage reflecting the changing of the seasons. If you don’t think of Pennsylvania as a leaf-peeping destination, then you will be pleasantly surprised to learn the state’s Laurel Highland region was recently named one of the top 10 destinations for viewing fall foliage by USA Today, a distinction it nabbed for the fifth straight year.
Fall foliage isn’t the only way to enjoy Pennsylvania’s beauty. While mom or dad might like to relax with a leisurely fall drive through leaf country, the kids will be much more likely to enjoy activities like biking, kayaking or camping. The state is home to 124 state parks where you can do all of the above, and if the ample opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air and exercise as a family isn’t enough of a draw, all of Pennsylvania’s state parks are free to visit, making it an economical choice for a family vacation. What you save on expenses like park fees can go to better use elsewhere, like doing more activities with the kids or enjoying a few extra special meals together during your trip.
In addition to the abundant natural beauty, the state is full of American history. Places like Gettysburg National Military Park let you explore the state while teaching the kids about the events that helped shape the country. This historic park isn’t just a favorite spot for military buffs, but also a great place to teach kids about the Civil War by showing them where one of the country’s most notable battles was fought and where President Lincoln got his inspiration for the Gettysburg Address.
When you visit Pennsylvania with the family, you have plenty of options for places to explore on your itinerary, but one destination that simply can’t be overlooked is Hershey, where every kid in the family (even the grown-up ones) won’t be able to resist places like Chocolate World. At this fun attraction, learn all about chocolate, sample plenty of sweet treats and even make your own candy bar; Chocolate World is just one of many places to explore in Hershey. After you’ve had your fill of candy, head over to Hershey Park for theme park fun with more than 75 rides and attractions all in one place.
Whether you spend your time exploring the outdoors, discovering a bit of American history or simply snacking on sweet treats, Pennsylvania in the fall is a great place for a family getaway. A few days or a whole fall school break, this time together will give your family just the boost it needs to power through back to school and the pending chaos of the coming holidays.
