Bermuda is largely insulated from the wild and unruly spring break college crowd, making it a perfect choice for families traveling with kids in tow. But that doesn’t mean this upscale island is free from fun. Whether you’re looking to explore or take in a history lesson, Bermuda delivers on experiential travel for families.
Go underground to see the most dazzling views in Bermuda at the Crystal and Fantasy Caves of Bermuda. Sparkling blue water, chandelier clusters and crystallized straws stretch out underground and uncover Bermuda’s hidden treasures. A paved walkway with guided tour lets families explore safely. Your kids will feel like the world’s first explorers as they get up close to calcite mineral deposits and underground waterfalls.
Tobacco Bay
Bermuda is full of beaches, but not all are a fit for families with kids. For a small beach where you can keep an eye on your kids with superb snorkeling, spend the day at Tobacco Bay. The majestic views appeal to parents and kids alike with 15- to 25-foot-high columns of limestone separating the bay from the open ocean, making it a perfect spot for kids to take a dip. After a day of swimming, hit the oceanside bar for a snack and drink and watch the water roll in.
Gibbs Hill Lighthouse
For an adventure above the sea, climb the 185-step spiral staircase up Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse to see panoramic views of the City of Hamilton, the Royal Naval Dockyard and beyond. The hill to the lighthouse and the climb itself can be a challenge, but is still kid-friendly for adventurers at heart.
Horseback Riding
There’s nothing quite like exploring Bermuda by horseback with your kids. Families navigate oceanside horseback riding with trails slicing through beaches, green landscape and riding for all levels. Spicelands Riding Centers in Warwick, Bermuda, gives easy access to the Railway Trails with private and group rides. For a journey along the northeastern coastline of St. George, try Moran Meadows in St. George to ride through lush landscape encompassing views of Coot’s Cove.
Tom Moore’s Jungle
Tom Moore’s Jungle, otherwise known as Walsingham Nature Reserve in Hamilton parish, takes visitors opposite Grotto Bay Resort for a reserve spreading across 12 acres of land. Although Bermuda is known for its sprawling beaches, Tom Moore’s Jungle takes visitors along a stone pathway past bifurcates and open grassy land. The area is dotted with “blue holes” where cliff jumping and swimming are popular, along with limestone cave mouths and multiple grottos. Exploring is best done with a guide who can show your family the various caves and swimming holes.
Although Bermuda has plenty of outdoor adventures, there are still stops like the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum, and Zoo and Bermuda Fun Golf at the Royal Naval DockYard, providing a break from beaches and natural wonders. Hopping a public bus or ferry also offers a reprieve while seeing the island. Just tell your kids it’s another tour, they’ll never know and delight in their bus driver and captain’s Bermuda shorts and light pink shirts.
