Dubai has just been officially recognized as the first Certified Autism Destination in the Eastern Hemisphere, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, marking a significant milestone for the city. Family travelers with kids on the spectrum will find a city embracing accessibility across all aspects, from hotels to attractions to transportation.

Dubai attained this distinction thanks to its initiatives like comprehensive staff training programs, expanded visitor support at attractions, and the introduction of sensory guides and hidden disability lanyards. Each certified location in Dubai also underwent an on-site review and received customary sensory guides developed by IBCCES.

In just two years, Dubai has seen more than 70,000 individuals receive autism and sensory awareness training; more than 300 hotels undergo the training and certification process to ensure inclusive stays for guests with autism and sensory needs; and more than 15 attractions earn IBCCES certifications, in addition to beaches and parks.

Even one of the most stressful places in the world, an airport, has made great strides, as is evident at Dubai International Airport. Paul Griffiths, CEO, Dubai Airports, noted, “We continue to work closely with our stakeholders across the airports to enhance accessibility, provide specialized training for frontline teams, and design environments that are supportive of people of determination, including those with hidden disabilities such as autism. As the world’s busiest international airport, we recognize the importance of leading by example, and this milestone reinforces our dedication to making travel more compassionate and human-centric for all.”

All certified locations in Dubai can be found on the IBCCES Accessibility app, free to download. The app provides travelers with real-time guidance on certified destinations, sensory-friendly spaces and tailored recommendations.
