Destinations / North America

Within Canada’s vast territory lies unending possibility for exploration. Head northeast to Newfoundland and Labrador — the province, not the dog breeds — and explore the island’s rugged history, panoramic beauty and stylish capital city, St. John’s.

If the ancient Norse archaeological site of L’Anse aux Meadows — the alleged settlement of Viking explorer Leif Erikson — doesn’t get the kids, history buffs and adventurers interested in Newfoundland, maybe the Gros Morne National Park’s many waterfalls, cliffs and glacial fjords will.

Take Viking tours through the moss-covered huts learning all about their ancient ways or trek through, taking in the park’s extensive beauty along guided trails or in the wide-open plains — all providing unbeatable scenery.

Just a bit further southeast, St. John’s quaint city atmosphere boasts 17th-century architecture, modish accommodations and contemporary comforts, lined by the Atlantic coastline and hillside walking trails.

St. John’s harbor, settled in the 1600s by British sailors, is famous for its colorful row homes and scenic views. Take the kids for a stroll or boat ride and take in the views before breakfast.

Get out on the water, whale watching, bird-sighting, viewing icebergs, visiting lighthouses and just generally enjoying the coast. Check out family-friendly excursions and tour opportunities here and choose the ideal boat for your family.

Hop back on land and explore the Cape of St. Mary’s, Bonavista and Trinity — all easily accessible for a daytrip in the greater Newfoundland region.

If you need more of a walk, visit Signal Hill and walk along the trails to Cabot Tower, the site of the first trans-Atlantic wireless communication. There are truly enough trails in and around St. John’s to keep your family occupied for days. Take in the sweeping ocean views and rugged terrain to build up an appetite for shopping, dining and exploring the colorful city.

Although a relatively quiet town, St. John’s does light up at night. Enjoy local cuisine, from fresh fish and vegetables to locally sourced meats and dairy, on a night out with the family. For live music, dancing and fun, head to George Street. This local hot spot boasts the best of the city’s entertainment and truly comes to life during the five-day George Street Festival this summer.
