Have a Hallstatt Christmas and an Austrian New Year during a family journey to the tiny village of, you guessed it, Hallstatt, Austria. Located along Lake Hallstatt, visitors explore the picturesque town’s romantic architecture, breathtaking views and incredible history.
Bundle up and bring the kids to the Austrian oasis this holiday season, enjoying the quaint village’s enchanted Christmas charm. Between Hallstatt’s natural beauty and historic allure, this town was made for the holiday season.
Fly into Salzburg Airport, located about 34 miles from Hallstatt, and take a direct shuttle into town. Airport shuttles range $92–190 per person depending on the car size and return trip. Or, book a private taxi with Sun Transfers for about $450 per car.
As small town as the village may seem, there is no shortage of hotels, restaurants and activities for travelers and families. Check into the Hotel Hallstatt offering winter deals and specials, including ski, snowboard and Christmas Market excursions. Each room in the hotel is uniquely decorated so each guest can experience their own individual stay. Check out the sauna, hotel restaurant and impeccable grounds.

Once settled in, head into the cozy village for some shopping, dining and exploring with the family. Take in the incredible winter views along the lake or head to the mountains for some outdoor adventure.
The town’s 16th-century architecture and tight alleyways seem charming from ground level, but become even more quaint when compared to the surrounding mountain range, reaching an elevation higher than 1,500 feet. The town of Hallstatt sits against the base of mountains to one side and the pristine shores of Lake Hallstatt to the other.

Take a quick visit to Salzwelten, an ancient salt mine with a subterranean salt lake connected by railway. Put on your hard hats and explore the mine’s tunnels and walkable attractions by the glow of your flashlight.
Step out on the Skywalk Hallstatt viewing platform for a birds-eye view of the town. Enjoy the view from above before heading back down below following trails leading to the Echern Valley glacier garden. Echern Valley’s beautiful glacial potholes and Waldbachstrub Waterfall are not to be missed — not to mention, a great walking tour for you and the family.
