New England Air Museum isn’t just a place to look at old planes; it’s a family-friendly museum that makes the history of flight come alive for kids and parents with an up-close look at the entire history of flight.

“Discover the possibilities of flight” reads the sign welcoming visitors into the first of three massive hangars that make up the museum’s exhibition halls (not counting outside displays or restoration and storage hangars). The aircraft and artifacts contained within represent the history of flight, including early attempts to master the skies, battle crafts, the heyday of modern air travel and all the various technological advancements that have made the whole industry possible. Exhibits explore the history of women in aviation (which dates back to 1908); untold stories of the Tuskegee Airmen; and the impressive legacy of aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky, a man who conceived and created some of the industry’s most innovative creations.

Aircraft on display have been beautifully restored in the on-site restoration shop, where work is painstakingly done by professionals. You are actually able to visit the restoration shop, as well as the storage area, on Tuesday and Thursday with the assistance of a docent. Tours are free of charge.

On my recent visit, I was lucky enough to tour the grounds with docent Keith Lindstrom, a retired Pratt and Whitney employee of 36 years who now shares his impressive knowledge with visitors. Lindstrom also volunteers as a restoration specialist, helping to bring old aircraft back to life for display at the museum. Lindstrom’s love for aviation, and for each and every aircraft housed at the museum, was contagious, making learning about the incredibly diverse history of aviation fun and fascinating.

Admission ranges from $23 for adults to free for kids under 3, with discounts in between for kids, seniors and veterans. V.I.P. tours, which cost $75 per person and require two-week advance notice, give you an intimate look at the museum’s treasures. These two-hour tours allow you inside access to some of the aircraft on display (including a visit inside the control car of a Goodyear blimp), and in-depth explanations about the history and restoration of several of the aircraft.

What is a Salvaged Stay and How to Plan One

Salvaged stays are an emerging trend in travel that let family travelers enjoy a unique way to experience a destination. Rather than staying in a destination’s big-ticket resort hotel or a cookie-cutter vacation rental, travelers look to the world’s repurposed properties, like abandoned mills and defunct train stations-turned-hotels that have found new life. These renovated properties are a lesson in sustainability and give families a chance to discover a unique view of the history of a destination.
