Lompoc, California: The Place for West Coast Rocket Launch Views

You don’t necessarily need to travel all the way to Cape Canaveral, Florida, to witness a rocket launch. Family travelers closer to the West Coast wishing to witness a rocket launch can find it in Lompoc, California. Just a short drive from downtown Lompoc is Vandenberg Space Force Base, the West Coast hub for NASA, commercial and military space missions.

Public access to the base may be restricted, but you can still see rockets take off from many vantage points around the city. Where are the best viewing locations?

Ocean Park

A public coastal spot, this beach offers open spaces and sweeping sky views. It’s accessible with a family-friendly layout, ideal for anyone looking for a front-row seat without going far from town.

Surf Beach

This is one of the closest public views of Vandenberg launches. Bring blankets and chairs and lay (or sit) out to capture amazing photos of rockets arcing above the Pacific. Note: Parking is limited, so arrive early.

Riverbend Park

The pad may not be visible from this park, but you’ll find wide-open lawns, perfect for views of the rocket launching against the horizon.

Allan Hancock College

Here, you’ll be farther from the launch pads, but you’ll enjoy clear views of rocket liftoffs. Bring binoculars or a zoom lens to best witness the launch. It’s also much quieter here.

Beyond rocket launches, Lompoc is home to some exciting, space-centered attractions. The newly relocated Space and Missile Technology Center, inside historic Marshallia Ranch Clubhouse, invites visitors to explore the history of Vandenberg Space Force Base through interactive exhibits.
