March 17–April 17, National Harbor celebrates spring with displays of blooming cherry blossom trees in Washington, D.C. In a city known for its beautiful pink trees lining streets and sidewalks each March and April, National Harbor will host a month-long celebration of the region’s more than 200 blooming trees.
Able to withstand colder temperatures, cherry blossom trees have captivated people for centuries with its alluring pink flowers. The flowers can last up to three weeks on the trees and, when the flowers wait another year before another bloom, the tree itself can grow up to two feet per year.
As an official participant of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, National Harbor’s celebrations include entertainment, food and drink specials, classes and hotel room packages. On April 3, experience Sakura Saturday to take part in free cultural activities like Japanese-inspired art, music, dance and culinary delights. Josue Martinez, an artist of Art in Bloom, will also update his chair for the festival.
Each night of the month-long celebration, not only will National Harbor will light up, but also The Capital Wheel will turn hues of pink in honor of the celebration. Other displays and events include the National Harbor’s conservatory installation with cherry blossoms incorporated into the display. Shop windows in the Waterfront District will feature cherry blossoms and many retailers will sell cherry blossom-related products.
Those wanting to learn even more about cherry blossoms and the cultures inspired by the beautiful flowers can take part in origami classes, cherry blossom painting, flower making and classes on Japanese gardens. More events and activities will continue to be added as the celebration draws near. Read the full list of activities and offers available at the celebration.
