Destinations / North America

New York isn’t just a fun state to visit; it’s full of opportunities for teachable moments for kids that add value to any family trip. In honor of Women’s History Month, take a moment to learn why Seneca Falls, in the state’s beautiful Finger Lakes Region, is the perfect destination for families looking to teach the kids a little about the journey women have had to take to get to where we are now.

When it comes to setting the stage for women’s rights, this little town packs a pretty big historical punch. Known as the birthplace of women’s rights, Seneca Falls rose to prominence in 1848 when the very first Women’s Rights Convention was held. Notable suffragettes like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Mary Ann M’Clintock led the way for milestones like women gaining the right to vote.

Today, that history is immortalized with attractions like National Women’s Hall of Fame, a place that not only honors and recognizes women like Cady Stanton and M’Clintock, but also all the women who have come after them and did their part to change the world.

Visiting is free, but every visitor who donates a minimum of $48 becomes an honorary member of National Women’s Hall of Fame and is recognized as a member of the 1848 Society. Open seasonally every spring through fall, it is not only a look back at the history of women’s rights, not to mention civil rights and human rights, but also an empowering message for our own daughters that they too have the power to make the world a better place for everyone in it.

The town is also home to Women’s Rights National Historic Park, where the homes of pioneering women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Mary Ann M’Clintock still stand, perfectly preserved and available for visitors to explore. You can also find Hunt House, the home of Richard Hunt, a local gentleman who hosted the social gathering that resulted in the idea for the first Women’s Rights Convention. While Hunt House isn’t open to the public at this time, its beautiful architecture is proudly on display in the park and stands as a testament to the movement and as a prime example of the beautiful historic homes of the area.

Throughout Seneca Falls you will find gentle reminders women are strong and powerful. While there are many other reasons to visit this beautiful town and the greater Finger Lakes Region in which it resides, spending some time in Seneca Falls is a can’t-miss for parents who want to show their children the power they possess to make a difference by teaching them about those who came before them.
