Destinations / North America

While Lake George, New York, in the southern Adirondacks, may be more well-known as a summertime getaway destination, the village recently added more ways for family travelers to have fun during wintertime.

For the first time, the Lake George Winter’s Dream experience welcomes guests with immersive multimedia installations combining winter magic with music, sound, video and similar elements. The experience is only open after nightfall and suitable for all ages. Tickets start at $23.90.

A new experience from Ice Castles, known for larger-than-life ice structures around the country, also premieres this winter; though, unlike the brand’s original creations, this experience does not rely so heavily on the weather. Winter Realms offers an ice sculpture garden, mystic light walk, polar pub, ice skating and a snowman park. The experience is open until March 3, with tickets available online starting at $17.

Not all the best winter activities in Lake George are brand-new. As area residents and frequent visitors know, Lake George Winter Carnival is a family-friendly, can’t-miss event with activities taking place every weekend through February.

Of course, the village is known for its outdoor adventure, so don’t just stick to the fests and holiday lights. If your family is up for it, consider strapping on some snowshoes (available for rent at area outfitters) and hitting the nearby trails. There are plenty of moderate day hikes in the area, including Prospect Mountain, Buck Mountain and Cat Mountain.

Best of Both Worlds

Enjoy the best of both worlds when you fly with TAP Air Portugal thanks to the Portugal Stopover program. With the program, TAP passengers, whether traveling for business, leisure or both, can stop in Portugal for up to 10 days at no additional airfare on the way to their final destination. What does this mean for travelers wishing to explore by both land and sea? It means after flying to Portugal with TAP and experiencing the country in an entirely new way, travelers can then embark on scenic river and ocean cruises from  Portugal’s port cities, or fly with TAP to another European destination.
