With an entire world ripe for exploration, it’s hard to pinpoint which places to visit in 2018. So many variables come into play — close to home or far away, a short getaway or a longer stay, mountains or beaches, cities or rural landscapes. Here, we take a look at three places to consider for 2018.
Fort Myers and Sanibel, Fla.
Found on the coast of southwest Florida, the beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel have a lot going on in 2018 and welcome you to visit. This month, snow birds aren’t the only ones who flock to South Florida — flying birds, too. January is one of the best months for birdwatching in the area. Focus your binoculars on various species of egrets, herons, waterbirds, hawks, woodpeckers and more. The Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins take to the field for Spring Training in February for a chance to get out to the ballgame under the warm Florida sunshine. Celebrate National Seashell Day in the Shelling Capital of the World on June 21, and from Sept. 21– 30, tap your feet and rock out at the Island Hopper Songwriters Fest.
East Cape of Baja, Mexico
What was once a sleepy fishing village, Los Cabos, Mexico, ups its vacation game with the opening of Four Seasons Resort & Private Residences Los Cabos at Costa Palmas later this year. The resort is Four Seasons’ first marina and yacht club to date. In addition to the Four Seasons Resort, the 1,000-acre beachfront community will feature Four Seasons Private Villas, Four Seasons Private Residences, Beach Club, Yacht Club, a 250-slip deep-water Marina, Marina Village, Golf Club and Golf Practice Facility along two miles of calm beach on the Sea of Cortés. Guests and residents will enjoy myriad activities such as windsurfing, kite flying, kayaking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, bird watching, snorkeling, fishing and surfing one of the best surf breaks in Baja.
Western Australia
Go to the land down under with a visit to Perth, The Coral Coast and The North West in Western Australia. Named one of the friendliest and most livable cities in the world, Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and filled with its own attractions, as well as a terrific spot for daytrips to the beaches of Rottnest Island and Scarborough Beach. The largest fringing reef in the world is on The Coral Coast, a terrific place to don mask and snorkel and swim with whale sharks (March through August) — the largest fish in the ocean — as well as humpback whales (June to November). In the North West, the rich history of Australia’s Aboriginal culture is on full display, as well as some of the country’s most iconic national parks.
