Wander through the winding streets and alleys of the Tangier medina, found in the old town section of the city, and take in the white-washed buildings of Moorish-Hispanic architecture. Grand Socco is a bustling square separating the newer parts of the city from the old medina. Cafés, restaurants, a mosque, shops and outdoor benches surround the square. Once a palace, Kasbah Palace is now a museum, inviting visitors to explore the 18th-century property, once the residence of the city’s governor and, when coming to the city, for the Sultan of Morocco. Tangier’s history could perhaps be no better shown than at the Phoenician Tombs. Overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, this necropolis holds about 100 tombs, with more than half carved into the rock, dating from 1,400 B.C.E. Other artifacts from the time period were also found, now on display at Kasbah Museum.
