Destinations / North America

Traveling north for an epic ski trip can be the highlight of the whole winter season for snow-bunny families. Maine just so happens to have a healthy lineup of family-focused accommodation options for those seeking natural slopes covered in fresh powder, but with the added conveniences of home, and then some. Keep this list of family ski mountains and local lodges in mind while planning your next family ski trip.

Lost Valley, Auburn

Hit the snow-tubing park with the family, or make your way to the cross-country ski slopes on the Nordic trails. Ski and snowboard with the family by day, rent fat bikes and check out local events before warming up with the older kids over brews at Lost Valley Brewing Company.

Black Mountain, Rumford

Head to Black Mountain in Rumford, Maine, for some fun family skiing and snowboarding, or sit back and relax on snow tubes while gliding (racing) down the mountain. Check out the long list of events happening at Black Mountain of Maine, including a Boogie Nights live music dance party.

Camden Snow Bowl, Camden

Over on the Ragged Mountain overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Camden Snow Bowl offers a long list of winter activities beyond the slopes. Try fat biking with the kids, get your steps in while snowshoeing and try something new with Nordic skiing. There is, of course, the classic ski and snowboard slopes offered for families across all ranges of expertise and physical levels. Check out the trail map and mountain terrain statistics to see which trail is best for your family.

Shawnee Peak, Bridgton

With 19 trails and even a few parks offering night skiing under the lights, Shawnee Peak in Bridgton, Maine, is a throwback to good, old-fashioned family fun. The kids can take ski lessons and adults can brush up on their skills before heading out on the mountain. Experts and intermediate skiers and snowboarders can find fun activities, from racing and slope-side entertainment to night skiing and detailed mountain reports, for a well-prepared day out on the trails.

Mt. Abram Family Resort, Greenwood

Literally built for family fun, Mt. Abram Family Resort offers trails for all experience levels. With 10 beginner slopes, 21 intermediate and 13 expert trails, everyone in your group can get the most out of the mountain. The ski area is located in Greenwood, Maine, just outside of Bethel and boasts a more than 1,150-foot vertical drop and elevation. There is a child care center for the little ones, so you can leave them in good hands and hop on the lift and hit the slopes.
