If walking through a winter wonderland is still on your family’s list of things to do this season, Maine can definitely help check that box. By this time of year, Maine is almost certainly covered with snow and awaiting the arrival of winter lovers and outdoor adventurers alike.
For a combination of the two, get the most of the seasonal powder by cross-country skiing with the whole crew. And for the best conditions and trails, head to these snow-covered locales with the family:
Five Fields Farm in Bridgton sits in the foothills of the White Mountains and has offered cross-country skiing for more than 10 years. An easy, hour-long ride from Portland, Five Fields boasts accessible trails for all ages and skill levels, not to mention a scenic view along the way. Enjoy the drive and arrive at the winter-ready locale refreshed from your city visit. Take in the snowy view from the lodge with a warm cup of something after the drive.
Offering equipment rentals and lessons across a variety of snow-based activities, the Nordic Heritage Center offers more than 12 miles of trails, primed and ready for winter fun — everyone from novices to experts welcome. Warm up in the lodge (because isn’t that the best part?) after taking on the easy, moderate or advanced trail with the winter-loving kids.
Another famous name in the game, Sugarloaf really has it all when it comes to snow sports and cold-weather fun. Skiers, snowboarders and all outdoor adventurers know this ski-and-snow hub for its more than 55 miles of trail loops, including diverse Nordic skiing possibilities.
Over in Bethel, Bethel Village Trails offers miles of fun in the winter sun. Hit the cross-country skiing trails, no matter your experience level, and enjoy this corner of Maine’s winter wonderland landscape.
Check out Visit Maine for more cross-country ski possibilities, including a slew of cold-weather tours, excursions and family fun. Check weather conditions, snowfall and all roads along your route, if you plan on driving, before your trip.
Pack warm and bring the kids, adult children or your partner for a much-needed winter getaway. Sometimes you just need a snow day!
