Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts, for the past 20 years, has focused on protecting and conserving ecosystems in Riviera Maya through its non-profit Ecological Foundation Bahia Principe Tulum. Part of the program, Protection and Conservation of Sea Turtles, saw record high numbers this year. The Foundation successfully protected 2,110 nests as of September, releasing 102,089 sea turtle hatchlings on the shores of Playa Aventuras in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The area is recognized as the most important beach for nesting loggerhead turtles
The season began in July, when volunteers started monitoring nests and hatchlings to ensure the protection of the endangered species. Some nests still need to hatch, with a final count to come in December when the season ends.
Guests of Bahia Principe Resorts in the area, as well as members of the community, are invited to watch egg hatchings and turtle releases at the end of the season. Events are organized based on the best time to see the hatchings, which can vary from year to year. The format will be slightly adjusted this year to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines and assure everyone’s safety.
The Ecological Foundation Bahia Principe, established in 1999, formed to protect the natural resources and ecosystems surrounding Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts. In addition to the sea turtle initiative, other programs of the Foundation include Rescue and Control of Fauna, Conservation of Native Flora and Conservation and Maintenance of Natural Areas and Environmental Education.
