Travel Tips

Family travel can be expensive, but don’t worry, Colleen Kelly is here to help! Kelly has advised family travelers across the United States on Family Travel with Colleen Kelly on National Public Television for more than a decade. She also hosts a podcast on Chicago WLS-AM travel talk radio called Round Trip with Colleen Kelly. Check out her top 10 money and time-saving travel tips.

1. Don’t stress about losing your luggage and invest in a luggage tag. Apple Air Tags start at $29.99 for one or you can get a four-pack for $99. Other brands include Samsung Galaxy and Tile Pro. If you want to avoid the issue all together, consider bringing a carry-on suitcase instead of checking luggage.

2. Families who travel a few times per year should consider the Global Entry Card, which includes TSA PreCheck. The lines are shorter, there is less waiting around and everyone can keep their shoes on. A background check and an application process are required to receive the card. If you are accepted, there is a non-refundable $100 fee. That being said, if you have the Chase Sapphire, Capital One Venture Card or an AMEX Platinum Card, the $100 fee is covered.

3. By booking a morning flight, you have more options to choose from if your flight is canceled or delayed.

4. Be aware of tricky airline verbiage. Don’t book basic-economy seats; instead, book an economy seat where you receive more perks and flexibility. Also, try your best to book a direct flight to avoid missing a connection flight due to flight cancellations or delays.

5. Make sure to cross-check prices with booking sites. Colleen Kelly actually has her own, Colleen Kelly Travel Club!Finding a place to book all travel and accommodations at once is sometimes easier, especially if you have a busy schedule.

6. Certain Hilton brands like Embassy Suites offer full breakfast service, cocktails and snacks. Families can even get a bigger suite with extra privacy.

7. Instead of heading to the grocery store, shop like a local and check out the nearby markets or enjoy a delicious meal at a local food truck. This way, you get a taste of the local cuisine and support the local economy.

8. If you are in a heavily touristed area, ask a local for recommendations on an affordable local eatery.

9. Cities around the world offer city passes, typically good for about 10 days. With a pass, travelers can take advantage of the destination’s attractions, transportation, tours and more.

10. Lastly, if traveling to a large city, consider staying in the city’s center. It’s more convenient and walkable to popular attractions. Although it may be a little more expensive, you skip all the traffic and expensive Uber rides.
