Summers are a great time to visit the country’s many great national parks, but that time of year also tends to get a bit hot and crowded … not to mention the fact the other seasons each have their own unique character and charm. When it comes to fall, you’re spoiled with choices if you’re looking for a great park to take the family to, but we’ve managed to compile a short list of some of the best choices around the country for a late season getaway the whole family can enjoy.

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, Hawai’i
It isn’t hard to find an excuse to visit the Hawaiian Islands no matter what time of year it is, and late fall is no exception. Autumn in Hawaii offers fewer crowds and great weather, making it the perfect season to visit one of the state’s two national parks. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawai’i is home to some of the most incredible nature scapes imaginable. With two active volcanoes (Kilauea and Mauna Loa) it’s a unique experience to teach kids first-hand about the power of nature in a place rich in culture and beauty.

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
The Grand Canyon is one of the world’s most well-known American landmarks, and for good reason. It is a remarkable destination everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime and, in the fall, you’ll be able to experience it without the oppressive heat Arizona can experience in the summertime. You’ll also be able to enjoy the north rim of the park, which closes for the season Nov. 30 (unless the first snow fall happens prior).

Big Bend National Park, Texas
Big Bend doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves, and late fall is the perfect time to visit with the family. During summer months, the climate can get pretty warm, so the cooler temperatures of fall make for a much more hospitable time to visit with kids. The park is massive, with many different areas to explore like the Chisos Mountains and Rio Grande canyons. A variety of hiking trails, including plenty of easy ones great for kids, make it much easier to explore the park’s diversity.
