City skyscrapers and busy New York City streets rarely conjure visions of fall foliage and changing leaves, but when it comes to crisp fall air and vibrant natural beauty, the Big Apple has it all.
Have the vibrant city lifestyle with wooded fall escapes with The New York Botanical Garden. Located 20 minutes from midtown, the NYBG boasts more than 250 acres of gardens, changing leaves, trails and beautiful natural scenery.
Fall Forest Weekends
One way to enjoy the city with your family this autumn, visit during a Fall Forest Weekend. Get the kids interested in nature during a tour and hike, or bond with your teens over a canoeing trip. Fall Forest Weekends include Nov. 3–4 and 10–11, 11 a.m.– 4 p.m.
Canoeing on the Bronx River
Only available the weekend of Nov. 3–4, the Bronx River canoeing trip is a must. Paddle along with the family taking the path-less traveled. The experience is definitely unique as the Bronx River Alliance is a hidden gem in the city. Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as beavers, birds and a variety of fish. The canoe trip is first-come, first-serve and weather permitting, so be sure to check back before your trip.
Take a Thain Family Tour
Enjoy a themed stroll through the 50-acre Thain Family Forest while learning about local birdlife, forest ecology and the history of the Thain Family. Take in the beautiful fall foliage on your walk, but don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes and layers for the weather. Tours are available over the course of both weekends.
Weird Science
Over at the Ridge Trail, the little scientists and biologists in your crew will love Citizen Science. Botanical Garden volunteers offer a scientific approach to the forest by collecting plant samples, learning about identification techniques, pollination, leaf cycles and fruit development. For locals, it’s a great way to get outside, get involved and learn something new.
Forest Theater
Would you even be in New York if you didn’t see some kind of show? Shakespeare in the Forest is held at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. in the Thain Family Forest, Nov. 3–4 and 10–11. Enjoy slap-stick comedy with a Midsummer Night’s Dream-inspired affair by the performers of Hamlet Isn’t Dead.
The list doesn’t end there. Bring the kids to a bird of prey demonstration, woodworking classes and more with the full lineup of Fall Forest Weekends.
