Listicles

The waterfront atmosphere and quaint, but bustling city center of Bar Harbor makes Maine an easy choice when it comes to a family-friendly vacation. While summer slowly fades, the weather in Bar Harbor offers that crisp night by a bonfire and warm days by the surf. Take the kids on a family vacation and make your way through these top spots.

Get out on the water with Diver Ed’s Dive-in Theater. Kids and parents, journey to the bottom of the sea from the comfort of the Starfish Enterprise. Sit comfortably onboard while Diver Ed swims down below feeding live footage of his view up to the vessel’s big-screen TV.

See the sights on foot by day exploring Bar Harbor’s fun shops, dining and beach-town atmosphere. Buck up with the older kids by night and head out on a spooky tour with Red Cloak Haunted History Tour. Opt for a twilight tour (the time of day, not the film or book) and learn all about the little-known history of the town and surrounding city’s mysteries. Take in the history, folklore and ghost stories with the kids, led by a red-cloaked guide.

A visit to Maine would be incomplete without an up-close look at marine life. Check out the Mount Desert Oceanarium for an educational experience. See live Maine lobsters and learn about the surrounding natural habitats, or create your own adventure at nearby Wild Acadia Fun Park and Waterslides. For boating families and water babies, check out the long list of boat tours, water sports and marine fun to be had in Bar Harbor. See Puffins in their natural habitat boat-side, or hop onto a kayak and paddle out with the kids. Whale watching, canoeing and endless scenery abound.

Throughout Bar Harbor, families swim in the freshwater beaches of Echo Lake since the waves are calm and perfect for kids. Dry off and take a walking tour following the Museum in the Streets signs lined up through town.

Active families, head to Acadia National Park for endless hiking trails, walking paths and cycling opportunities. Guests tend to stay the night and set up camp, enjoying the cool evening weather and unobstructed sunset views. Walk up to Ira Mountain in Kingfield, or get back to town at night for a Bar Harbor Ghost Tour — clearly, this town has some fun history.

With a timeless town offering nightlife and dining after days hiking or enjoying water sports, this town appeals to families of all ages. Check out seasonal activities like summer movie nights and fall festivals before your trip north.
