Who’s ready for spring?! (Raises hands.)

Though Mother Nature keeps stringing us along as to when spring will really arrive, we take a look at spots throughout the world where flowers are in bloom and you can develop spring fever until our temperatures cooperate.

The Orchid Show is in full bloom through April 22 at the New York Botanical Garden; acclaimed Belgian floral artist Daniel Ost designed the show.

Biltmore Blooms at The Biltmore in Asheville, N.C., has begun, and runs through May 24. This spring, the 8,000-acre backyard of George Vanderbilt, designed by architect Frederick Law Olmsted, comes alive with the sights, scents and sounds of spring.

In Rhode Island, Newport Daffodil Days Festival celebrates spring with more than 20 family-friendly events, including a dog parade and private garden tours, amongst nearly 1 million blooming daffodils throughout the city. The festival is in bloom April 14–22.

The 27th annual Tanto Tulip Festival in Japan is scheduled to take place April 18–30, and features 1 million planted tulips blooming in about 300 different designs throughout the countryside. Tanto is about 20 minutes from the hot springs town of Kinosaki.

The centerpiece of the 17th Annual Berlin Cherry Blossom Festival on April 29 is 10,000 blooming cherry blossoms that signify where the Berlin Wall once stood. Welcome spring in Germany with food and fruit wines from throughout the country.

The Macao Lotus Flower Festival (June 9–13) in China is an annual celebration of the aquatic perennial flowers that bloom for a short time once a year, and Macao goes all out with displays throughout the city. The festival is also symbolically significant, since the lotus flower is on the Macanese flag and is a symbol of continuous harmony and purity.

The largest flower show in the world arrives on the outskirts of London July 3–8 with  The Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Hampton Court, once the home of Henry VIII, is about an hour’s train ride into the countryside from the city.

Germany Welcomes Families to Celebrate 35th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

I may be dating myself here, but I remember the day the wall fell in Berlin like it was yesterday. It was a pretty big deal — sadly mitigated by “pieces of the wall” later being sold in our local department store as memorabilia — and while it signified the end of a divided Germany and the Cold War, its memory lives on as a reminder the human race can do so much better.
