Salt Lake City International Airport

is undergoing a major overhaul and it means good things are in store for travelers. The Airport Development Team has been hard at work planning what will be a whole new airport that will completely replace the existing facilities.

By the time the project is completed in 2025 the airport will be ready to keep up with the rapidly growing population and travel needs of Salt Lake City with more than 25 million passengers expected to pass through annually. The first phase is already well underway and is expected to be complete by September 2020. It involves a brand-new parking garage, a central terminal and the west end of two linear concourses.

The second phase, expected to begin construction as soon as the first phase is finished, will involve tearing down the remaining existing facilities and build the east ends of the two linear concourses, completing what will be the first hub airport built in the 21st century.

Travelers will start to reap the benefits of the remodel as soon as phase one is complete. Beginning in September 2020, the airport will offer an extensive selection of dining options from a variety of cuisines so passengers will have plenty of choices to relax with a good meal while waiting for their flight. Currently the airport’s selections are mostly limited to fast food and grab-and-go options with the exception of a few higher-end options like Cat Cora’s Gourmet Market. The new SLC will have options for all types of dining.

Visitors will be pleased to learn the airport will be enforcing street pricing with all of its dining options, meaning prices at in-airport restaurant locations will be the same as the off-site locations. Gone will be the days when travelers have to pay elevated airport prices for their meals, something passengers have unfortunately come to expect from airports around the world.

In addition to updated facilities, increased terminal space, larger parking facilities and an impressive selection of shopping and dining options, the new SLC will proudly exhibit the artwork of local artists as well as artists from across the country. The most visible art installation, the New SLC Art Wall, is expected to be located at the TSA security checkpoint and will consist of a 30-foot long, 11-foot high mural that will showcase the culture, history and spirit of the people of Utah.
