Destinations / North America

Memorial Day weekend may be the unofficial start of the summer, meaning beach days and barbecues, but our nation’s capital has a few hot spots to compete. Plan your stay and enjoy the long holiday weekend, stress free (or close to it).

For a view of the White House and Washington Monument, the W Washington DC has a room for your family. Take in the view of the city from the rooftop and enjoy a few cocktails, snacks and live music celebrating the lazy weekend.

Honoring American veterans and active military, the National Memorial Day Parade is the largest of its kind. Enjoy the all-ages event with the kids and watch marching bands parade Constitution Avenue. The parade begins on the National Mall at 2 p.m., so get there early or simply stake out a spot on your hotel rooftop with a view. Expect fun floats, endless music and loads of patriotic fanfare including enthusiastic crowds.

Another great stay option for families that want to be in the heart of the weekend festivities, the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel is in a prime location. Situated between the White House, Capitol Hill and downtown DC, the Renaissance is at the epicenter of the Nation’s Capitol.

For something a bit more modern and fun, head to The Wharf for a trendy urban scene met with idyllic outdoor activities.

Recently opened in October 2017, the Wharf boasts waterfront attractions including kayaking, paddleboarding and sunbathing with the added touch of live music at The Anthem for the holiday weekend. The open green space offers views of the Potomac to one end and the cityscape to the other.

For more live music, greenery and fun check out some Jazz in the Garden at the National Gallery of Arts. Located in the gallery’s sculpture garden, guests enjoy the limited free concert series Fridays in the summer. Enjoy a drink and small bites at the Pavilion Café, or save room for dinner at The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C.

With the Quadrant offering live music Fridays and Saturdays as well as an amazing Sunday brunch at the Western Bistro, The Ritz-Carlton has a luxury cuisine lineup worth exploring.

Plans or no plans, Memorial Day weekend is just the start of a fun summer season and a much-needed long weekend. Take advantage and enjoy some family time away, or at home over a relaxing staycation.
