Travel Tips

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is renowned the world over for not only its size, but also the incredible quality of its exhibits. It’s the largest children’s museum in the world, with 500,000 square feet and 30 acres all home to more than 130,00 artifacts. In its second year, there’s also a sports park, perfect for kids who need to work off a little energy; the park includes just about every sport you can imagine, from basketball and football, to soccer and pedal car racing, along with a 60-foot-tall climbing tree and equipment for both kids and adults.

Here are the newest family attractions at the museum, and when you should make a trip to catch them.

“Take Me There: Greece”

Little globetrotters will love the museum’s travel-centric exhibits. This year’s focus is on Greece, with the “Take Me There: Greece” exhibit opening June 15. Explore so many aspects of Grecian culture, with recreations of a Grecian plaza, restaurant, bakery, shops, homes and more. Get hands-on and learn some Greek folk dances and the Greek alphabet. Accompanying the exhibit is “Treasures of Ancient Greece,” opening the same day and on display through the end of the year; it features more than 150 artifacts, from sculptures and jewelry to armor and art.

Star Trek as You’ve Never Seen It Before

Through April 7, sci-fi lovin’ families can check out the “Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds” exhibit. It includes more than 100 artifacts from the television series and the films, including the ship’s navigation console from the original series, costumes and more. A video booth lets guests recreate memorable scenes.

Plus, you’ll hear the legendary George Takei narrating the museum’s new sound and light show at its planetarium and space object theater.

Star Trek has entertained, educated and inspired generations of fans which makes an exhibit exploring Star Trek’s role in advancing science and technology a perfect fit for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis,” said Dr. Jeffrey H. Patchen, president and CEO, The Children’s Museum. “Together, families will undoubtedly reminisce about the past, enjoying the iconic characters and artifacts they’ve loved, while discussing the impact Star Trek has had influencing the future by promoting equality and advancing science and popular culture.”

A Jurassic Announcement

Keep your eyes peeled for more exciting news from the museum! Later this month, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is partnering with two European natural history museums and some of the world’s best paleontologists to work on a Jurassic dig site, which can only mean more exciting discoveries and learning opportunities for families visiting the museum in the future.
