The cosmopolitan city of Bogotá, Colombia’s capital, boasts an expansive playground for travelers. With a mix of old-world history, natural beauty and new attractions, Bogotá offers a bit of everything — all in a day’s visit. Venturing to South America with the family or spouse, keep these top spots in mind before your trip.
History and Culture

Hop on the Teleférico de Monserrate, or funicular, up another 2,000 feet to the Sanctuary of Monserrate, a religious and cultural mecca in Colombia. The church’s simpler exterior pops against the impressive backdrop of the sprawling city of Bogotá below. Visit the local shops within the Monserrate market and grab a bite to eat from the Colombian food vendors, or save your appetite for the French and Colombian restaurants onsite, along the walking and bird-watching paths. True athletes, skip the funicular and trek the two-hour hike up the mountainside, but be sure to train first as the elevation proves challenging for even the most conditioned hikers.
The streets of Bogotá tell a story, literally. With designated walls lined with commissioned graffiti, enjoy a walking tour learning all about the cultural significance of the pieces and the rugged history behind the art depicted in each and the struggle for artistic freedom in the city.
Museums and Shops
Located in the heart of Old Town Bogotá, Candelaria is a one-stop-shop for fun street markets, a town square, museums and incredible architecture. Stop in the Museo Botero to not only see the private collection of Fernando Botero, but his own pieces as well. The building’s layout resembles more of a private villa than a museum.

Stroll through town visiting the street vendors, bargaining for jewelry and stopping in various cafés for refreshments between sightseeing. You’ll see the famous Candelaria church, across the street, or calle, from Museo Botero, before venturing through cobblestone walkways, narrow alleys and an array of historic buildings along the way.
Nature
While surrounded by mountain ranges, Amazon jungles and incredible natural beauty, Bogotá is a city smack-dab at the center of Colombian countryside. A bit north of the picturesque Old Town of La Candelaria, take in the sights along the hiking trail of Quebrada La Vieja
. Hit the secluded, rugged trails looking for waterfalls and overlooks, or enjoy the natural beauty with an expert guide from Andes Eco Tours.
