5 Outside-the-Box Places to Make an Unorthodox Escape

Known for its seafood, Ivy League universities and harsh but scenic winters, few would probably realize Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts have a couple of geographical sweet spots when it comes to grape-growing along the Coastal Wine Trail. The consortium includes 14 locally owned vineyards great for a two- or three-day weekend. A $99 pass entitles the owner to two tastings at each. In Rhode Island, Newport Vineyards and Carolyn’s Sakkonet Vineyard are just a few minutes’ drive from downtown Newport, where there’s plenty in terms of nautical charm along a scenic waterfront. Newport Vineyards is New England’s largest grower of wine grapes, and produces more than a dozen varieties a year at a gorgeous facility that includes tours and tastings, restaurant, boutique and live music. Don’t miss the regional specialty: small-batch ice wine.

United Continues Its Global Expansion

United Airlines keeps soaring to new heights, recently announcing another expansion of its leading global route network. The airline added new non-stop flights between Newark (EWR) and Marrakesh (RAK), Morocco; Tokyo (NRT) and Cebu (CEB), Philippines; and Houston (IAH) and Medellin (MDE), Colombia. That’s not all: United also plans to increase flights to popular worldwide destinations including Hong Kong (HKG); Seoul (INC), South Korea; and Porto (OPO), Portugal. Following the recent agreement to increase flights between the U.S. and Chinese governments, the airline now adds four weekly flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Shanghai (PVG).

Family Fun in the “Napa” Next Door

Wine country weekends and family road trips are typically not part of the same vacation-planning conversation. However, Fairfield is intent on breaking some of those stuffy foodie destination rules. When people think of Napa, they’ll think of 4- and 5-star resorts, ultra-exclusive restaurants like The French Laundry, and wineries where it can cost more than $50 just to walk into a tasting room. These tropes alone can make it hard to believe that Fairfield, located just a few miles to the east of Napa, can give parents a taste of wine country sophistication (at more reasonable prices) while delivering food and nature-focused fun appealing to an all-ages crowd.

Crabbing in California

When you hear fresh seafood and shellfish festivals, it’s easy to think of summertime in New England and the famous, lobster-teeming shores of Maine. While summer on the East Coast may be awhile away, crabbing season on the West Coast is right around the corner.
