The kidcation trend is redefining the concept of family travel. This trend sees more families giving children influence in vacation and travel planning. When children take the wheel, traditional trips turn into immersive, kid-led experiences.
Children shape every decision, from destination choice to daily activities. Recent research shows 60 percent of U.K. parents choose vacations based on their child’s interests, and more than half let their children contribute to itinerary planning.
Luxury travel brands noticed this shift and now adapt, offering amenities like bespoke scavenger hunts, junior cooking classes, and immersive experiences like a Harry Potter-themed London tour or a castle visit with a “real knight.” Travel by Luxe sees families prioritize engagement, learning and memorable “kid-first” experiences.
“Kidcation is more than a trend. It’s a shift in family travel philosophy. By putting children at the heart of holiday planning, families create meaningful, joyful experiences that engage all generations,” said Amy Doherty, travel expert, Travel by Luxe.
Some influences in the boom of kidcations include social media, particularly TikTok and Instagram, which turn children’s favorites into must-visit destinations; experiential priorities, with families seeking interactive and immersive holidays; and a parental desire for engagement, because when kids are invested in the trip, the holiday is more enjoyable for the entire family.
How can you successfully kidcation? Involve your children from the start and ensure they are interested in planned activities. Then, choose hotels boasting kid-friendly amenities, like pools or kids clubs. A balance of fun and downtime helps avoid overstimulation, and themed experiences or local culture workshops blend learning and entertainment.
Some do worry children could choose frivolous or impractical activities. However, guided planning and curated experiences allow children to express preferences while ensuring a structured and safe trip.
