What to Know About New Rules Before Booking Flights to Europe

Travel Tips

Summer will be here before you know it, which means you might be in the midst of planning your summer family travel to Europe. Things used to be fairly simple — buy plane tickets, book rooms and pack some bags. But there is a new rule in effect for a few months now, and you’ll want to familiarize yourself with it before you book those already overpriced (and only getting more expensive) flights.

As of Oct. 1, 2025, Americans have to go through the EU’s Exit and Entry System. There is nothing you have to do ahead of time, but once you arrive, authorities will collect biometric data like your facial image and fingerprints, along with passport details and entry and departure information. This regulation applies to Americans entering 29 different EU countries (you can find a complete list here) for visits up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Other rules, like having a passport valid for at least three months, are not new, but they still remain in effect. There is another change coming; however, and if you are planning to head to Europe later this year, you’ll want to be aware of it. The EU is still planning to roll out the ETIAS program, with an anticipated launch set for the last quarter of this year.

The program, which will require U.S. travelers to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization and pay a €20 fee, has had several delays so far. But once it launches, getting your authorization will take anywhere from a few minutes to 30 days, so keep an ear open and check with the ETIAS website if your travel plans have you heading to Europe later this year.

5 Botanical Gardens Great for Kids

Across the United States, botanical gardens add features to appeal to young visitors and spark their interest in nature and plants. Special sections are designed to appeal to children with activities; play features; sensory experiences; and plant tricks, such as green walls and arbors with hanging gourds or fruit inside.

Best of Both Worlds

Enjoy the best of both worlds when you fly with TAP Air Portugal thanks to the Portugal Stopover program. With the program, TAP passengers, whether traveling for business, leisure or both, can stop in Portugal for up to 10 days at no additional airfare on the way to their final destination. What does this mean for travelers wishing to explore by both land and sea? It means after flying to Portugal with TAP and experiencing the country in an entirely new way, travelers can then embark on scenic river and ocean cruises from  Portugal’s port cities, or fly with TAP to another European destination.
