Travel Tips

Families venturing all the way Down Under should know a thing or two about the area they’re visiting. While the whole rugged, wild and adventurous landscape of Australia offers Outback vibes and all things natural, there are more cityscapes and metropolitan destinations than meet the eye.

While you can still see wallabies and ride through the rural Australian countryside, here are a few must-visit cities in Australia, loaded with family-friendly activities, attractions and accommodations.

Sydney

To start with the most glaringly obvious, Sydney is one of the largest cities in Australia as a whole and the capital of New South Wales, so activities and points of interest abound. You’ll have more to see and do at your fingertips than you’ll probably even have time for, but make the most of the city’s top tourist attractions — which, sometimes, you’ll find are popular for a reason.

Hit Bondi Beach with the kids and play in the sand, surf, swim and dine in waterfront cafés or take in the sights of Sydney Harbour Bridge and walk along the daring platform of Sydney Tower. The Skywalk boasts the best views in the city and your adventurous kids will love the thrill — or truly test their fear of heights.

There’s also the obligatory Sydney Opera House visit, but be sure to take time and explore the city like a local too. Rent bikes and ride along pedestrian paths or walk around the city; exploring on foot is one of the best ways to explore and find fun oddities as you go. Bring the kids to Luna Park for rides and fun, or view wildlife roaming around the Taronga Conservation Society.

Hobart

For families seeking something new and different, but still with that quaint, small-town touch, add Hobart to your list. While the capital of Tasmania, this region feels more like a town than a city. Families can picnic and walk along the pier, all with views of the River Derwent.

Architecture and history also draw the eye as families stroll along and make their way through town. Hit the shops of Salamanca Place, littered with galleries and dining locales, or enjoy the sweeping views of Mount Wellington from a variety of hiking and biking trails, suited for a mix of ages and athletic ability.

Melbourne

Back to the big city stylings, Melbourne is a fun destination for food, wine, nightlife, art and incredible beauty. Hit the beach, check out the iconic 12 Apostles and explore Great Ocean Road while getting your steps in, or hit the colorful streets of Melbourne’s famously artistic city laneways — think of the fun family photos in front of the eclectic and vibrant street art.

Of course, this is Australia and checking out the local wildlife is a must. Once you’ve had a chance to see the Koala bears or resident penguins on Phillip Island, don’t forget to make time for some live music and fun nights out with the older kids. There’s always something going on, whether a comedy show or pop-up concert. Even just taking in the vibrant nightlife on foot or at an open-air restaurant, the whole family will enjoy a fun way to top off the night.
