Germany is a fascinating destination with so much to see and do; each member of the family is sure to have an incredible time no matter what time of year you go. This may just be why Germany has been ranked No. 1 cultural travel destination in Europe for the past 10 years. This year, the country has even more reasons to make it a top family travel destination. Read on for three reasons why you shouldn’t miss this European destination.
35th Anniversary of Fall of Berlin Wall
One of Germany’s most historically significant events celebrates a major milestone this year. This November marks the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, making it the perfect time to use travel as an opportunity to teach little ones about world history. Family favorites like renting a bike to ride along Berlin Wall Trail or visiting attractions like the Berlin Wall Memorial or the Checkpoint Charlie Wall Museum are a must. As the anniversary approaches, a variety of events to celebrate this landmark anniversary are also planned throughout the year.
EURO 2024 UEFA Soccer Championship
Germany is the place to be for soccer fans this year as the country hosts the EURO 2024 UEFA Soccer Championship. From June 14 to July 14, Germany will host 24 nations for a total of 51 soccer matches spread out across 10 different cities. Not only is this a great opportunity to experience world-class soccer at the highest level, but celebrations will also be in full swing in each of the host cities. Matches will be held in Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Stuttgart, as well as Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Leipzig, Munich and Gelsenkirchen. With games spread out across the country, EURO 2024 is the perfect opportunity to spend a few extra days exploring each city.
Night of Palaces in Potsdam
In addition to the sports and history that make 2024 such a great year for travel to Germany, you can’t forget about the culture. The Night of Palaces in Potsdam, known as Potsdamer Schlössernacht in German, is a beautiful introduction to German art and entertainment. This annual festival takes place each year — this year on Aug. 9 and 10 — and recreates a magic of days gone by with an elaborate celebration showcasing Germany’s beauty and culture. The event is held in Potsdam’s beautiful Sanssouci Park, not only a UNESCO World Heritage site but also home to numerous castles and gardens lit up at night during the event. The result is magical as costumed performers, acrobats, musicians and dancers perform into the night.
These events are not only sure to offer something for every member of the family, but they will also introduce you to the enchanting beauty of Germany and have you ready to start planning your next trip.
