As the weather warms up, get outside with a blanket, basket of goodies and the entire family. Here are the six best cities for your next family picnic.
New York City offers many a green oasis beyond the concrete jungle. We’re not just talking Central Park, either (though Central Park is well worth a picnic visit if you haven’t been for this sole purpose before). You can also try Battery Park, Governors Island, Brooklyn Bridge Park and Pier 45. No matter where you’re staying in the city, you’re just steps away from a great spot to spread out your blanket.
For a variety of scenery to choose from, pick Austin for your picnic. You can dine by the water at Barton Springs before taking a dip (just remember to wait an hour!), or munch among the sculptures at Laguna Gloria.
Try Marina Barrage for great city views and plenty of space for sports. For a more peaceful atmosphere, go with Singapore Botanic Gardens. There are also several beaches that make a good spot for an outdoor lunch, including Tanjong Beach and East Coast Park.

What better spot for a romantic picnic than Paris? Of course, you can make the event a family affair if you can find some parks that don’t mind a little bit of rambunctious running around the lawns (many parks and gardens throughout Paris are strictly keep-off-the-grass). Le Saut Du Loup is a good choice, with lovely surroundings, as are Parc des Buttes Chaumont, Luxembourg Gardens and Bois De Boulogne.
Pick up some amazing Italian fare and enjoy a relaxed lunch in one of the city’s lush parks. Some favorites include Villa Borghese, Villa Doria Pamphili and Parco degli Acquedotti. You’ll need to take the metro to reach the latter, but you’ll be treated to historic structures and a little taste of Italian agrarian bliss.
It doesn’t get any better than a picnic with views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Golden Gate Park is popular for a reason. Beyond the grassy knolls perfect for relaxing with a bottle of wine for the adults and Kool-Aid for the kids, the park also offers tea gardens and trails, among other attractions, so there’s plenty to do during your visit. Just make sure you come early, as the park can get crowded.
