More than just the Disney character your family may be familiar with, Dumbo is actually a trendy neighborhood in Brooklyn. Boasting incredible views of Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge and indie shops all along the waterfront, Dumbo is a great indie find for families looking for a boutique neighborhood feel, but with the iconic city views and attractions of New York City.
The entire area is actually pretty small, just more than 30 acres and is divided by the Manhattan Bridge stretching overhead. While easily walkable for all ages, some streets wind and pop with cobblestone and unique converted warehouses lining the streets.
In the summer, head to Brooklyn Flea’s outdoor marketplace, but any other time of year, check out a few of our favorites next time you hit the quirky neighborhood with the kids.
Find retro pieces, oddities and antique-themed hardware at Front General Store. Located on Front Street, customers find unique and minimalist incense, bath products, accessories and quintessential Brooklyn gifts.
You can find a J. Crew store almost anywhere, but Empire Stores is worth a visit for the building alone. This Civil-War era brick building showcases the waterfront to one side and cobblestone streets to the other. Visit the Feed Shop and Café or just see if any fun events are going on while you’re there, or just stop in for a family lunch with views of the iconic bridges in the near distance.
Head to Trunk and shop around with the kids, sifting through funky clothing, unique accessories and fun gifts to bring home, including scented soaps and small-batch candles.
Shop trendy pieces for men, women and children at Brooklyn Industries. All bags are made in New York and the creative space even gives back a small percentage of proceeds from online orders to the Brooklyn Community Foundation.
Shop for books in Powerhouse Arena, or plan your visit for a community event, book launch or reading both you and the kids can enjoy. Showcasing local talent and events year-round, this venue is a great find for families spending the weekend.
Hit the streets on a walking tour, or take yourselves on a tour through all the random, unique and often locally crafted goods lining the avenues of Dumbo. Accompanying many of the fun shops are plenty of eateries to stop in, so save room for a wide variety of eateries.
