Destinations / North America

New things are coming to Fort Myers and Sanibel in Florida. There are plenty of attractions, special events and new accommodations to check out on the Gulf coast of Florida.

Take advantage of all the region has to offer with the Fort Myers Sun Saver Passport. Sign up online and receive the pass via text message on your phone for savings at local businesses. Go on a waterfront tour with Ostego Bay Foundation. The 90-minute tour includes a visit to the Marine Science Center Museum. Take a ride on a refurbished 1927 carousel at the Shell Factory and Nature Park. The ride costs $1 per person.

The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge lecture series is perfect for anyone interested in learning more about the local wildlife. Hear from authors, photographers and other local experts. The 17th annual free series runs through March 19. The Sanibel Shell Show is going virtual this year, taking place on the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club’s YouTube channel March 5–6 from 12–3 p.m. The event includes videos, door prizes and photo contests. Plan ahead for the seventh annual Island Hopper Songwriter Fest. Running Sept. 17–26, the event will feature 100 shows from more than 80 country music singer songwriters, with many shows free of charge.

Travelers have new properties to choose from during their stay. Luminary Hotel & Co. opened its doors in September 2020. The 243-room boutique property offers numerous dining options, an indoor/outdoor fitness center, pool and 10,000 square feet of adaptable meeting and event space. A $15 million renovation at Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village is set to debut this month.

Some of Europe’s Best Day Cruises

A week cruising along the Danube or the Rhine may be the stuff of dreams for many, but family travelers can enjoy views from the water in ways kinder to the family budget. Many riverside cities offer scenic cruises, and some Baltic or Mediterranean ports have daytrips to nearby islands or coastal attractions. In several cities you can cruise the canals, and in Switzerland you can spend a day cruising on Lake Geneva, with sightseeing stops in lakeside towns.
