The kids may be familiar with the mythology of Transylvania, Romania, but there is much more to the incredible country than ghost stories. Romania, a Balkan country in Eastern Europe, offers a unique blend of old-world elegance and culture with natural wonders, historic cities and modern luxury. Families and guests enjoy the great outdoors, incredible architecture, bustling city streets and unique accommodations.
Whether trekking through the scenic wonders in the Carpathians or taking a tour through the medieval fortresses of Transylvania, Romania’s charming cities and sites offer something for everyone in the family.
The natural beauty of Romania can be seen at every turn, but the Carpathian Mountains are truly magnificent. The mountains stretch out and around the country, creating a lush rolling meadow at the base. Hiking trails remain the best way to get around the mountains and take in the countryside.
Check out the Danube, the second-largest river in Europe, ideal for fishing, boating or just admiring as it flows into the Black Sea.
Bucharest, Brasov and Sibiu are among some of the more popular main city destinations in Romania and all offer amazing cuisine, skiing, shopping and accommodations. The vast forests of Brasov act as the perfect backdrop to the Bran castle, art museums and ethnography museum, while Sibiu is ideal for outdoor adventure and historic landmarks.
It’s no coincidence stories of vampires in medieval castles originated in Transylvania as it is littered with ancient fortresses. The palaces scattered over Romania require their own tour, as visitors come from all over the world to witness the beautiful, elaborate buildings. Historic towns such as Maramures are more like a walk through time displaying ornately carved gates, Gothic-style churches and primitive villages.
If the unique folklore, culture and medieval towns and villages aren’t your family’s thing, check out the beaches in Mamaia. This popular resort draws beach-loving tourists each summer for relaxing and sunbathing by day and vibrant nightlife. Vama Veche is a local favorite, attracting visitors for a slower pace and rustic resort experience.
