Travel to Japan this year and experience these unique art festivals taking place throughout the country.
Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival
This multimedia festival combines visual and performance art in Sado Island this summer. Expect to see performances like the traditional onidaiko dance. Many installations are displayed at Ryotsu Port, the main ferry gateway.
Held in Niigata Prefecture, this festival showcases the region’s culture through modern art installations. About 300 works will be displayed across more than 470 miles in the region. The festival runs July 13–Nov. 10.
This festival utilizes locally sourced materials and the cultural heritage of Omachi in Nagano Prefecture to create large-scale art installations against the alpine landscape. This year’s theme is water, due in part to its importance as a resource as well as a feature of the land. The festival takes place Sept. 13–Nov. 4.
Forest Festival of the Arts Okayama
This annual festival hosts local and international artists, musicians, dancers, designers, chefs and more. Inspired by nature in Japan, the festival takes place at venues throughout Okayama Prefecture. The event will be held Sept. 28–Nov. 24.
Launched in 1961, this outdoor sculpture festival celebrates the city of Ube. Local and international artists participate in the festival, with many installations housed at Tokiwa Park. The 2024 festival takes place Oct. 27–Dec. 22.
