Travel Tips

Southern California is known for its year-round sunshine. It’s often said Los Angeles has two seasons — hot and hotter. If you are looking to actually experience the fun of different seasons, such as the changing of the leaves in fall, LA probably isn’t at the top of your list, but don’t count it out! A fall trip to the City of Angels can be just as rewarding as a drive through the Vermont countryside to see the fall colors. Check out the following tips to make the most of your trip.

If you are up for a little drive outside of the city, it is actually possible to experience those colors of fall the Northeast and Midwest are so famous for. Head to Oak Glen, a couple hours east of LA, to the beauty of the season and take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Located in the Little San Bernardino Mountains, this quaint little town offers picturesque scenery along with some of the best apples around. The local shops sell their famous apple pies and delicious apple ciders and you can head into the orchards to enjoy the fall tradition of hand-picking your own bushel of crisp apples. There is also plenty of unique shops to explore and country-style restaurants to grab a bite to eat.

Test your sense of direction inside a corn maze. LA may not be known as farm country but the outskirts of the greater Los Angeles area do in fact have plenty of farms that grow — you guessed it — corn! By fall most of the crops have been harvested and the remaining fields get turned into mazes and labyrinths for some late-season family fun.

One of the best corn mazes in town can be found at the Fall Harvest Festival at Moorpark Family Farms. This annual event runs daily until the end of October and gives families a great place to spend a day enjoying all the best parts of farm life. In addition to the corn maze there are pig races, tractor rides, a pumpkin patch and even a chicken show.

Take advantage of the great weather and head to one of the local campgrounds for some outdoor fun. During the summer months temperatures can get too high for camping to be enjoyable but during the fall the climate is quite pleasant. Head to the local mountains or deserts and enjoy that beautiful sunshine and some fresh air. While it’s still warm enough to enjoy swimming in one of the local lakes, bring a jacket because, while the daytime temperatures remain agreeable, things can get a little chilly once the sun goes down, especially in the mountain and desert regions.
