If you are looking for an authentic island experience when you visit Hawai’i, make plans to hop over to Molokai. This Hawai’ian island is considered “Hawaiian by Nature,” and it is an island that remains true to its roots. That being said, visitors will not find large resorts or fine dining on Molokai, but rather a handful of small hotels and condos, and local spots that serve up locals’ favorite dishes.
The dramatic cliffs that line the island’s coastline are the highest sea cliffs in the world, rising upwards of more than 3,900 feet. The views of the cliffs tumbling into the ocean are best seen from a helicopter tour, but you can venture on the ground, too.
A truly humbling and memorable experience on Molokai is a visit to historic Kalaupapa National Historical Park, where victims of Hansen’s disease (commonly known as leprosy) were exiled in the 1800s. The only way to access the park is via a mule ride, a hiking tour or a smaller commuter plane to Kalaupapa Airport. Visitors are only permitted into the park with a permit, obtained through Damien Tours LLC.
Another guided hike to consider is to the Halawa Valley, on the island’s east end. Accessible only by guided hikes, you will explore the ancient valley and the sacred temples, waterfalls and breathtaking views found within.
On the west side of the island, beach enthusiasts will want to spend some time at Papohaku Beach. At three miles long, it is the largest white (golden) sand beach in all of Hawai’i, and on clear days you may even spot Diamond Head on Oahu. While surf can be a bit rough here in the wintertime, at other times of year the waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. And if your timing is right, you may even share the beach with a Hawai’ian monk seal. If you do, be sure to keep your distance; the seals are endangered and there are heavy fines for disturbing them. For more snorkeling, check out Kumimi Beach (also known as 20 Mile Marker Beach), known for its easily accessed snorkeling.
If you are indeed ready to dive into Molokai’s waters, you will likely be amazed by what you may see. Hawai’i’s longest fringe reef — 28 miles long — is found offshore, and its finger coral provides ideal habitats for green sea turtles, monk seals and incredibly colorful reef fish.
Molokai offers a different perspective of Hawai’i, one that is natural and authentic. And it is worth a visit.
