Cruising

Early booking and special deals can save family travelers hundreds or thousands of dollars on cruises, and they can even score free airfare. Couples can take advantage of two-for-one fares when they travel on small-ship river cruises in Europe or save 20 percent on Alaska or Caribbean cruises.

For European river cruises, Scenic leads the list with a double deal: Early booking for a 2024 river cruise rewards you with two-for-one fares and free premium economy or economy airfare.

Scenic’s river cruise collection for 2024 includes new Danube sailings, two Scenic Enrich experiences, and more than 50 new Scenic Freechoice excursions for deeper cultural immersion. Travelers can choose destinations and activities matching their own interests as they cruise along the historic Rhone, Danube, Rhine or Seine rivers.

If you book before Sept. 30 for a holiday sailing on one of Emerald Cruises’ 100-guest luxury yachts in the Caribbean, you are eligible for two-for-one fares, plus an additional $500 Emerald Exclusive savings per suite. Guests who book by Sept. 30 and pay in full within 30 days of booking qualify for free air or up to an additional $4,000 in savings per suite.

Book before Sept. 30 to get a 20 percent discount on cruises on European rivers and on the Mekong Delta with AmaWaterways. You can combine the discount with Ama’s AirPlus promotion, which offers a fixed round-trip airfare of $899 for selected cruises to Europe.

The combination of a 10 percent discount for booking before Oct. 31, and a 10 percent further discount for paying in full before Oct. 31 means a savings that could range $720–2,980 per cabin on UnCruise Adventures. Cruises include Alaska or the Canadian Coastal & Olympic Peninsula Adventures.

Wichita: The Best Little Big City for Families

Wichita may be the biggest city in Kansas, but, as I walked around town, I couldn’t shake the feeling I was in one of the country’s greatest small towns. Perhaps it was the absence of all the things that serve as constant reminders you are in a large city. Instead of crowds, traffic jams and busy people rushing through life, I found clean, wide-open streets and happy, smiling faces — just the kind of place you want to explore with a family.
