Caribbean Destinations Safe for Family Exploration

Travel Tips

The Caribbean offers so much to families — beautiful beaches, luxury resorts and an easy getaway that’s often reachable via a few hours’ flying. However, some destinations in the Caribbean are safer than others, especially if your family likes to explore and leave the resort, versus just staying blissfully surrounded by complimentary cocktails and pre-arranged activities your entire trip. If you want to truly see the Caribbean islands, here’s where you’ll want to go.

Puerto Rico

This U.S. territory bounced back remarkably well from devastating hurricane damage, but tourism dollars still go far in helping the Puerto Rican economy. Luckily, tourism is definitely on the rise in this destination, and for good reason. It’s easy to get there, with no passports needed (in case your traveling tot has yet to get their first) and lots of flight options to choose from. Old San Juan is filled with history and culture and safe to get around on your own. There are plenty of accommodation options, ranging from luxury hotels to Airbnbs. Plus, the beaches are breathtaking.

Anguilla

Anguilla isn’t as easy to reach as Puerto Rico, as you often need to take a boat ride following your flight, but it is safe. Travelers can feel completely comfortable renting a car and ferrying themselves around the entire island, with kids in tow, seeing the best it offers, from pristine hidden beaches to historic spots.

Aruba

Similarly, Aruba is safe enough to drive around on your own without feeling the least bit worried about your wellbeing. In fact, the island is so small you can easily see a large majority of it with one of the island’s popular quad tours; if you don’t fancy being with a group, you can rent a quad for your own private use and zip around the island on your own. Likewise, families should feel safe walking to restaurants, shops and more, day or night.

St. Barts

St. Barts is one of the Caribbean’s safest islands. The small destination is also one of the most expensive, attracting celebrities and royalty. Expect a hefty price tag on your stay and a bit of a longer travel day, as you’ll have to fly into St. Martin and then fly a small plane to St. Barts or take the ferry. Once there, have fun exploring the designer shopping outlets, restaurants and charming architecture.

This Airline Stopover Program is Great for Families

My children and I travel to Europe frequently. For many of our trips, we take Icelandair. Icelandair is comfortable and affordable. Additionally, they offer excellent connectivity between several cities in the United States and European hot spots. Even better, the airline offers perks for families, including discounted fares for children, activity boxes and special meals.

Best of Both Worlds

Enjoy the best of both worlds when you fly with TAP Air Portugal thanks to the Portugal Stopover program. With the program, TAP passengers, whether traveling for business, leisure or both, can stop in Portugal for up to 10 days at no additional airfare on the way to their final destination. What does this mean for travelers wishing to explore by both land and sea? It means after flying to Portugal with TAP and experiencing the country in an entirely new way, travelers can then embark on scenic river and ocean cruises from  Portugal’s port cities, or fly with TAP to another European destination.
